News of the pending sale of the 'red brick shul' on Burlington's Archibald Street was heard in the summer of 2023. The building, a centerpiece of the city's historic "Little Jerusalem" neighborhood and home to three different congregations during the building's 136-year history, was sold to a private developer in summer 2023.
Many in the Jewish community who held memories of the sacred space, its old-world design and precious treasures sought to keep the contents from being lost to posterity.
Days before the June 2023 sale, a group of community members took steps to secure important artifacts: original pews, the dark wooden octagonal raised bima, the Ner Tamid (eternal light), memorial plaques and the sanctuary’s one-of-a kind thirteen foot tall copper ark, constructed in 1931 by then Ohavi Zedek congregant and tinsmith Morris Wool in memory of his wife, Fanny.
